The Channel Server is the software that is installed in edge servers close to the end-users. The number of Channel Servers and their placement is chosen to achieve wanted load balancing and redundancy. Where to place the Channel Servers depends on the type of sites and services that shall be managed, the number of end-users and the topology of the access network.
The Channel Server receives channels, content and application descriptions, from a Distribution Server. The Channel Server installs and configures each site according to its channel description. The Channel Server invokes all resources a specific channel demand and ensures that its working environment is set up correctly. As end-users access the local services it feeds back statistics and billing information to the Distribution Server.
